Sometimes, when you hit a rough patch in your love life, you need to put things in perspective and say to yourself ‘It could have been so much worse.’ But hold on just a second there, I’m going to amend that statement. It could be a whole lot worse…unless you’re Katy Perry.
Sure, no one could really understand why she married dirty-sexy British comedian Russell Brand in the first place. He had a sex addiction and was a recovering addict. But then he dumped her during the holidays in 2011 and immediately started dating some yoga enthusiast. If you think that’s bad, it gets so, so much worse.
Naturally, the pop star hasn’t really wanted to discuss her failed marriage with the press, and that’s only fair. But now, in a new interview with Vogue, she’s finally found a place for her confessional. And hey, if you’re going to air your dirty laundry to the media, why not do it in Vogue, hey?
According to this particular California girl, her New Year’s Eve gift from Russell was a divorce — and he didn’t even have the good grace to do it in person, with streamers or confetti (though he may have inadvertently set off the wrong kind of fireworks). Nope, that British wanker did it by text. GALLING.
“Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011,” she told the magazine, adding of why she fell in love with his scrawny, scruffy, hairy self in the first place: He’s a very smart man, a magical man and I was in love with him when I married him.”
Perry beat herself up emotionally when her relationship was over, but found the strength to let her feelings of inadequacy and guilt go. “I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day,” she said, adding, “I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him,” she said. “All I can say about that relationship is that he’s got a beautiful mind. Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds. [But now ] I have to be happy being alone, and I am happy I believe that I will be loved again, in the right way. I know I’m worth it.”
There’s so much to say here I barely know where to start. First off, good for Katy. When you’re happy being alone instead of with the wrong partner (cough, sneeze, snort John Mayer), you’re on the road to self-love, as is the realization that you’re always attracted to Mr. Wrong a.k.a. “broken birds.”
But more importantly: he dumped her by text?
This just goes to show how different men and women are. Men hate confrontation and will do anything to avoid it. Also, when a relationship is over, guys don’t sit and pine for us — they move on. They don’t wonder when they’re going to run into us, they’re not going to think we look so amazing post-breakup that they’ll want us back. When they’re done, they’re done…and Russell the King of Cad’s lack of contact after divorcing his wife by text message is the perfect example.
So I will say this: pay perfect attention to what your boyfriend/husband isn’t saying, and note that his actions are far more important than his words.
And thank your lucky stars that no matter how bad you’ve had it, your worst relationship probably won’t compare to this indignity.
