Over the Top Wedding Proposals Like Kim Kardashian’s: Hot or Not?
It’s being called the “proposal of the century” and “the most romantic proposal on Earth”, but is Kanye West’s marriage proposal to Kim Kardashian really so romantic — or as it a drama as gratuitous and staged as her show is? You be the judge.
Earlier this week, Kanye popped the question to Kim on her 33rd birthday at San Francisco’s AT&T Park. The 36-year-old rapper first asked momager Kris Jenner for her blessing (any man who would dare to do so might be penalized with a ritual flogging) before getting down on bended knee in the park to present her with a 15-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond ring.
In addition to the cost of the ring, ‘Ye rented out the stadium and had “PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!!!” scrolling on the Jumbotron.
Upon Kim’s obvious “yes”, a 50-piece orchestra played Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful” as well as one of West’s own songs, “Knock You Down”. Not any obvious choice, but hey, why not?
Kim’s friends and family were also in the park, and congratulated her just minutes after her engagement became official. Oh yeah, and I hear there were fireworks as well. It’s confirmed but I wouldn’t put it past either of them.
I get it. In some parts of the world (re: the South), weddings – and proposals – are a big deal. No one wants an unimaginative guy who proposes over a glass of champagne on bended knee. We want creativity, we want passion, we want romance.
I’m not a cynic, but part of me believes that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian want all those things too — and press, to go along with it.
Really, I’m not hating. Kanye has the money to go big, and if he loves his girl as much as his gestures imply, good for him.
But for me, real love isn’t about expensive gestures. It’s the person’s day-to-day actions that count that most.
If Kanye shows how much he loves Kim on the same kind of scale every day, then I’m happy for them. That kind of love is a blessing.
Now if I could figure out what message he was trying to send by buying Kim $1 million gold-plated toilets…
