Love Doesn’t Discriminate Against Weight
We all fall in love, regardless of our shape, size, age, color or height. We are all deserving of love (though some of my exes have truly tested the validity of that statement). So why did one NYC-based speed dating organization feel the need to discriminate against the overweight by hosting a ‘Skinny Minny’-only event? How DARE they!
The group’s website reads: “We all have relationship ‘deal-breakers’, and that does not make us shallow, we’re just single New Yorkers that know what we want and are attracted to.
“Obviously there is more to it than just height or size, but for many of us that initial ‘attraction’ factor is at least a starting point.
“Guys, no need to worry about meeting a biggie-size chick ‘down-sizing’ to an 8 like when you’re dating online. We’ll be checking labels at the door!”
It’s rare that you’ll find me dating a man who isn’t tall, green-eyed and brown-haired, but isn’t it my prerogative to choose a diminutive red-haired dude if I so pleased? That was rhetorical, by the way.
We can’t predict who we’ll fall in love with. We can talk about ‘types’ and ‘attraction’ all we want. But the fact of the matter is that you never really know who you’ll click with. The guy that looks good on paper might be the biggest jerk of all time in reality. Conversely, maybe that dead-beat musician your mom warned you about suddenly became a rock star (albeit a faithful, devoted one a la Jon Bon Jovi who is, for the record, has been married to his high school sweetheart for 23 years). My point: you can’t know.
The folks that run this organization should be ashamed of themselves for discriminating against those with a few extra pounds. It isn’t a little bit of flesh that makes someone unattractive, it’s their attitude. Your partner’s looks won’t last forever. In the long run, it’s their heart that will make you happy.
