Why We’d Rather See The World Than Settle Down
Believe it or not, quenching your thirst for travel is substantially more important than silencing your biological clock these days. Or so claims a recent study by Bing, which found that modern-day women (and men) would much rather fulfill their travel goals before settling down to start a family. I happen to be one of them. Are you?
A new poll found that both British men and women consider traveling to be the top priority on their bucket lists, usurping getting married or having kids. We still consider having a family to be important, however, as it ranked second on the list, while tying the knot slid into fourth place.
Inexplicably, swimming with dolphins was top tenth priority. Really, ladies?
The male results were equally as interesting, given that they, too, listed travel as the top priority. However, they ranked starting a family third on the list, while marriage goals were, far less importantly, in the ninth spot.
So why do we value travel above marriage these days? Is the urge to ‘find ourselves’ really more important than settling down?
Selfishly, I say YES but then again, I’m not only single, but have never even thought about my fantasy wedding. I have never looked at bridal gowns. I do not — and have never — made a scrapbook or pre-scripted vows to the mythical man of my dreams.
Sure, exploring the world with a partner would be pretty epic, but doing it alone is even better. Just think of all the people you’ll meet and all the experiences you’ll have…without anyone to hold you back.
You are the captain of your own destiny, charting your own course, on a quest for total self-sufficiency and self-exploration. Life doesn’t get much cooler than that.
Should you happen to meet someone on your jaunt around the world, all the better!
At the very least you’ll have had an adventure, right? And when (if) you do settle down, at least you’ll know that you didn’t let anyone or anything stand in the way of your dreams.
Marriage can come later. Don’t ignore your desire to travel…because you will regret it.
