Would you choose love…or money?
With tax day come and gone, I can safely breathe again. Another year, another return. Yada yada yada. But after seeing the results of a recent Chemistry.com survey on the importance of love vs. money, I had to do a little thinking about what mattered most to me. My answer, of course, was love. But what do other Americans prefer? Would anyone really cold hard cash over a warm heart?
OK, so I should have more faith in people than I do. According to the survey, love conquers all for most of the 1,600 people polled. 74.6 percent of men and 70.3 percent of women said that if they had to choose, they’d opt for love. Thank God we’re (mostly) aware of what’s fundamentally important in life.
But I have to wonder about the 25.4 percent of men and — shockingly — 29.7 percent of women who do think that green makes the world go round. Who are these shallow, materialistic souls, and how can I avoid them (for the record, my guess is that the majority reside in Manhattan or Los Angeles)?
I mean, we’ve all heard of gold diggers, but I’m naive in the sense that I have a hard time believing that they actually exist. It seems so unromantic to believe that a woman would choose a high-end Prada-only wardrobe or cover each of her unnecessary 15 guest bedrooms with Pratesi sheets room over a partner that made her feel like the richest woman in the world. But what do I know? I still believe in the fairytale.
Yes, we need money to survive. Sure, we need to have a house over our heads, and no, we cannot be actually be nourished on love alone. But true love is such a rare thing to find that it’s almost…priceless. And yes, I did steal that from a MasterCard commercial…but it doesn’t make the sentiment any less true, does it?
