IF LOVE IS A GAME THESE ARE THE RULES
Every time I see Marilyn, I work something out in my head. Whether it be a business plan, how I really feel about a guy or how to live my life, she helps. No, she isn’t my therapist: she’s my stylist.
Anyhoo, while Marilyn was taming my hair into submission recently, I confided that, for the first time in my life, I had absolutely no one in my life that I even had a crush on. There was no ex-boyfriend waiting in the wings to swoop in, no one I was dating, no one I was interested in. I told her that it felt weird to be crush-less, as I’ve been giving boys the eye since I was five.
She gave me, as usual, some sage advice and advised me to read a book entitled If Love Is A Game, These Are The Rules.
In the guidebook, Chérie Carter-Scott, Ph.D.presents ten simple rules to help us find true love and create long-lasting, authentic relationships.
Marilyn, who has been in a wonderful relationship with a man who treats her like a princess and is everything she hoped to find in life, was single for some time and constantly picking the wrong man. After reading the book during her dry spell, she formulated a list based on the things she wanted, needed and wished for in a relationship. And, like magic, voila! She found her prince charming.
I haven’t read the book yet, but I intend to. Marilyn explained that when you read it and you’re involved with someone, you make excuses for the man in your life. Show me a girl who hasn’t done that and I’ll tell you that pigs really fly. I don’t want to make excuses, and I’m sick of picking poorly. So I’ll read.
The ‘list’ is one of the all-time most important things you can make, and every single friend I’ve had that’s happily involved or married has made one at some point in their lives. You don’t want to settle, and you don’t want to change. You should feel comfortable in your relationship, find someone that accepts you for who you are and makes you a better person. Most of all, you should find someone that makes you really happy. Because at the end of the day, my happiness isn’t something I plan on giving up…and nor should you.
And seriously, trust your stylist: because she gets into your head AND makes your hair look fabulous. How’s that for true happiness?
