How to make a Vision Board

Make a Vision Board
By Tania Van Pelt
Making a vision board is a great because it’s fun, and you give your imagination room to run wild. My friend Jassel shared this quote with me, and I think it’s a good thing to keep in mind while you create your vision board: “The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind.” William James US Pragmatist philosopher & psychologist (1842 – 1910)
After shooting Tony LeRoy’s (www.tonyleroy.com) episodes several months ago, I was editing them with Ilya, our editor, and I watched them over and over. Each time was like the first time. Each viewing calmed me and reminded me of things to do, ways to be, to get my heart’s desire. One of Tony’s suggestions, after getting clear about what you want, is to make a vision board (or treasure map or dream board). And I started thinking, “I’ve got to make another vision board.” It was fun the last time I did it. I love looking at it, and a lot of it has come to pass in weird and beautiful ways. The first and last vision board I did was in 2007. And I put all this stuff about making movies, videos, being my own distributor of content, being in NY (where I lived full time), going west, having a house, being Happy. You get the picture. I even put the word, in big pink letters, HAPPINESS on my vision board. Never realizing that I would do a show, a website, a series called Happiness! So fast forward to this month, March 2011. Is it time to do another vision board? I thought, “yeah, I loved the other one but let’s make something that’s fresh and resonates with my path now, where I am and where I want to be.” But then I kind of forgot about it.
I was having lunch with my friend Julie two weeks ago. Our conversation was all over the place. We talked about Happiness Series, how to make it better, bigger, more dynamic, how to get more visitors to the site and more viewers. And then I mentioned the vision board. Julie said she had been out earlier that week with friends, and her one friend, who is getting married soon, makes a vision board for every step of her life and the other 7 friends out that night had no idea how to do it – how to make a vision board. Gosh, it’s so easy, right? Why don’t they know how? Well, turns out a lot of people have no clue how to make a vision board. Maybe because most of us don’t really know where we want to go in life. It’s trickier than it seems, right?
Jassel texted me later that day and suggested that we have a HOW TO section on our site, like how to… make a kale smoothie? Or what about How to… make a vision board. Viola! That’s what I would do! I would make my own vision board – Fun!- and then take pictures, describe and show, step by step, everyone else how to do it.
So first of all, what is a vision board? A vision board is a collage of images, pictures and affirmations of your dreams, desires, hopes. Images that mean something to you, that are beautiful and powerful. It can also be called a dream board, treasure map or vision map. Vision boards can be a great way to make you feel positive, and are helpful if you’re using the law of attraction.
Next step, meditate on what you want in life, where you’d like to be and where you’d like to go… Don’t worry if nothing comes to you. Because when you do the third step of going through all your magazines and finding pages, words, photos that are special to you, you’ll get a picture of what you want. And remember: these images, pictures, photos, don’t have to be exactly what you want or are looking for… they just have to be something you relate to, something that could represent the exact thing you’re looking for but can’t find.
Find scissors, poster board, and glue. And do the fourth step: cut out the things you like, the things that mean something to you.
Fifth step: arrange them on your poster board, in as artful a way as possible. And the sixth step is to glue them in place. You can totally collage out, putting words on top of images and vice versa. Have fun with it.
And then the final product, your vision board. Mine really makes me happy. I added a few phrases after I finished it. It’s fun to tweak it. Tweak your vision of your life.
And then find a place you’d like to hang it, look at it, live with it for a while, and then like Tony LeRoy advises, put it away, you can forget about it, let it work it’s magic on you and your subconscious.
Send us pictures and stories of your vision boards! Let’s all share our journey, making our dreams happen! Most all of all, though, have fun with it!

As I navigate the waters of life and happiness, I have
found that writing is my vision board and it may not be as
cluttered as one would think. I certainly don’t want to
include and wish for things that are impossible. Many
times I must remind myself of what MJ told LA Reid
“I need music that changes the world”. For me the pursuit
of finding the right words that change the world makes me happy. I haven’t found them yet, but trying is very fulfilling. Here is just a tiny bit of prose for the soul.
“In search of nourishment I found my soul,
the honesty of food is love.”
– Ernest Sjö
Thanks for sharing! Whatever works for you, works!
Please, Ernest, keep sharing your version of a vision board with us… your written thoughts & images that resonate with you. I find what you’ve written so cool & I’d love to get updates from your world. Thanks! Tania
I dare not try to solve the sustainability equation.
Surely a myriad of thoughts will illuminate my failure.
Skills long since lost by men are in dire need.
I will toil and sow the earth with callus hands and feet.
A grotesque and regrettable surrender will bear insignia,
the theft of time no man can replace.
Capacious respect for the cycle of life is certain due,
truth is required for all who seek understanding.
For the grain, the beast, the fish and fowl, account I will owe,
it is the sacrifice of life that implores a thankful reply.
In search of nourishment I found my soul,
the honesty of food- is love.
- Ernest Sjö
Standing at the crossroads of a decision, one experiences fear and hope at the same time.
Each of us travel a path that includes new challenges, some harder to understand than others.
Fear was only letting me place simpler challenges on my vision board.
My logical guide was telling me to create something easy to understand.
The compass in my heart was pointing in a true direction.
Design each element with purpose. Deliver introspection and cadence.
Form each phrase as if they were a different persons experience as to meld inclusive thought.
Focus on the fundamental, the tangible, and pray for hope.
Here is where I stand today. Hoping to share reflection. Hopeful to share elation.
